A PHOTOGRAPHER’S LOCAL VENUE GUIDE
Garden Route Wedding Venues: The Complete Guide, Town by Town
By Sharyn Hodges, Junebug winner, 300+ weddings · Last updated: July 2026 · 50+ venues across 5 towns
FROM BEHIND THE LENS
The region, read through its light.
The Garden Route’s wedding venues stretch from Plettenberg Bay’s beaches and Crags vineyards through Knysna’s lagoon and forest to the farm chapels of George and the safari reserves behind Mossel Bay. This guide maps the whole region, town by town, from a photographer who has shot more than 300 weddings across it.
The Garden Route packs South Africa’s most varied wedding country into two hours of coastline: beach ceremonies, vineyard greenhouses, forest chapels, heritage manors, a private island and a Big 5 reserve. I’ve photographed weddings across all of it, this hub organises every venue by town, each linking to my full local guide.

SHARYN’S HONEST NOTES
How to choose (a photographer’s honest advice)
01
Pick the light before the linen. Ask where the sun sets relative to the ceremony spot on YOUR date, I plan every timeline backwards from sunset, and some venues make that easy while others fight it.
02
Interrogate the wet-weather plan, not whether one exists, but whether you’d be happy if it happened. Glass venues (Kay & Monty) and character interiors (Emily Moon) turn rain into a feature.
03
Count the real capacity, seated with a dance floor, not cocktail-style. Then subtract 10% for comfort.
04
Sleep-on-site changes everything: venues with accommodation turn a wedding into a weekend and photograph calmer mornings.
05
Book 12 to 18 months out for peak-season Saturdays (October to April), venues and photographers fill on the same timeline.
PLANNING ANSWERS
Questions couples ask before they choose.
Plettenberg Bay has the deepest bench, beach, river, vineyard and manor venues within 20 minutes of each other. Knysna adds the lagoon; Mossel Bay adds safari; George adds farm country. The honest answer is: it depends on the wedding you want, and this hub is built to help you decide.
October to April is peak season (book 12 to 18 months out); May to September brings soft winter light, whale season on the coast, open dates and kinder venue rates.
Many do, Emily Moon, Forest Hall, Sky Villa, Seeplaas, Gondwana, Oakhurst and others sleep the wedding party on site, which turns the wedding into a weekend.
Yes, I’m based in Plettenberg Bay and shoot the entire Garden Route as home ground, with no travel fees inside the region.
