A PHOTOGRAPHER’S VENUE GUIDE
BITOU
VINEYARDS
Bitou Vineyards is a boutique wine estate on the edge of Plettenberg Bay, where former polo fields have been planted to vines around a fine-dining restaurant and terrace.

WHY COUPLES CHOOSE IT
Why couples choose Bitou
Bitou is the young gun of the Plett Wine Route, and it photographs like it has something to prove. The vines run flat and neat where polo used to be played, the Tsitsikamma mountains sit behind, and the restaurant terrace looks straight over all of it. Casey & Michael’s wedding here gave me some of my favourite vineyard frames on the whole Garden Route.
The estate pours its own label at your reception, a Malbec, Sauvignon Blancs, an MCC and the Miss Mo rosé, which is the kind of detail guests remember. It’s five minutes from town, so guests stay in Plett and nobody drives far.

THROUGH SHARYN’S LENS
Photographing a wedding at Bitou
The vine rows give this venue its geometry, long, clean lines that pull the eye straight to the couple. I shoot the rows side-on in the late afternoon when the light rakes across the leaves, and front-on at golden hour when the mountains behind go blue. The terrace works all day: it faces the vines, so even a midday drink shot has a backdrop.
Because the estate is compact, the whole day happens within a few hundred metres, which means more time in photographs and none in transit. If you want a second location, Lookout Beach is ten minutes away for a sunset finish.
PLANNING AROUND THE LIGHT
A timeline shaped around your date.
Sunrise and sunset shift throughout the year, so there is no single perfect ceremony time at Bitou. I build each timeline around the sunset time on your actual date, the ceremony space, the weather and how the light rakes across the vine rows through the afternoon.
MAR TO SEP
March – September
The sun sits lower and golden light arrives earlier in the afternoon. The lower sun lights the vine rows side-on from mid-afternoon, ceremonies sit earlier, and the mountain backdrop holds colour right up to sunset.
OCT TO FEB
October – February
Days run long and the light stays strong late. Summer light on the open vines is strong until late, a later ceremony keeps guests comfortable on the terrace and lands portraits in the soft final hour.
YOUR DATE
Your personal timeline
Once your date is confirmed, I work backwards from sunset and create a photography timeline around your ceremony, portraits and reception, with enough flexibility for weather and the unplanned moments that make the day yours.

The estate suits intimate to medium weddings across its terrace, lawn and vineyard settings.
Three self-catering units on the estate, Cliffhanger, Meadows and Grapeview, with the rest of your guests five minutes away in Plettenberg Bay.
The restaurant interior covers the reception, and vineyard rain photographs are honestly underrated, moody skies over vines are a gift.
Yes, Bitou pours its own award-winning label, including a Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, MCC bubbly and the Miss Mo rosé.
